Happy Wednesday, Sunnyside friends!

Fall is in the air, the pumpkins are coming out, and we are excited to get cozy and check in with all of you this Friday at our second PTSA meeting of the school year! In September, we had 52 attendees! Come one, come all, bring your empty coffee mugs, and be ready with your ideas, your energy, and your questions! We have loads of great information on the meeting agenda and you can review last month’s minutes here. We truly hope to see you there!

CHICKEN UPDATE!
Our beloved Cluckers will be based at Sunnyside for just over one more week before they officially head to their new home at a family home in Milwaukie. They leave next Friday, October 14th, so your kiddos will be working with Nathan on a special farewell project in their Garden special classes between now and then. Our Sunnyside students will be writing up notes of love and gratitude for all the chickens have provided us (learning opportunities and eggs!) Here’s a look at some of the amazing creations! Be on the lookout for changes in the garden as Nathan dreams up a new future for that space.

With just 3 weeks between you and Harvest Fair, (woo!) now is the time to take action! There is something for everyone to contribute and it really takes all of us.

Donate Toys. Those tiny, long-forgotten trinkets at the bottom of your kids’ bins and drawers…now is their moment to SHINE. Bring in your (clean!) small toys for our carnival game prizes. Drop off in the SES Office.

Bake or Bring Cookies & Goodies. Our Cookie Palace and Baked Goodies Boogie need copious, mega, epic amounts of donated baked goods. We cannot have too many. Store bought or homemade, we’ll take ’em all! Please consider and label gluten-, nut-, dairy-free options. Sign up on the link above to tell us what you’re bringing. Deliver on Friday 10/21 (3:00 – 4:00 p.m.) or Saturday 10/22 (2:30 – 4:00 p.m.).

Tickets: The Harvest Fair is free entry, but you will purchase carnival tickets to participate in the games, activities and food booths. Advance ticket sales begin at school on Wednesday, 10/19. Stay tuned for more details.

Seeking a Fundraiser Venue for Spring Gala for SES!
Sunnyside PTSA is bringing back our big Spring Fundraiser event, and we are seeking a venue that can hold up to 250 people. If you or someone you know might have a lead on a great venue, we’d LOVE to hear from you! We are also soon going to start seeking fabulous auction items from our many SES families. Thank you for considering a donation to a local restaurant, a few nights in a family vacation home, or a gift card to your family business. Fundraising is one of the most important functions of the PTSA. Not only does the money we raise go towards fun events for our students, but it also pays for some of our beloved staff salaries and many of the unique field trip opportunities that are essential to the Sunnyside curriculum. BIKE BUS CONTINUES!

The Sunnyside Bike Bus meets at 8:20 Wednesday mornings (as long as our volunteers are available!) with a leaving time of 8:25 a.m. Below are the routes, leaders, and meeting times if you want to join the fun! It’s a great group!

Our fourth annual pie sale is coming up and we need help putting up flyers, preparing and handing out pie samples at Harvest Fair, staffing our Harvest Fair table, and distributing pies on November 16th. If you made it to Harvest Fair this weekend, you are probably still taking in how incredible it all was! And if you’re lucky, you’re still enjoying some leftover Goodie Boogie cake too! For first timers like us, it was so awesome to see students, families, teachers, and community volunteers all come together to create a joyful fundraiser that couldn’t have been more successful or fun! A HUGE thank you to everyone who planned, participated, volunteered, and enjoyed the magic of Harvest Fair. You’ll get to read a full recap below, and you’ll even have a quick chance to weigh in on how to make next year even better!

For those of you hoping to get more involved in future events or activities at SES, join us at our next PTSA General Meeting next Friday, November 18th at 8:45 a.m. in Room 102. Coffee by Oblique Coffee Roasters as usual so bring your own mug! Did you know we have 5th and 8th graders present at each meeting? They’re amazing! We’ll also be talking about our fundraising progress, Read-a-Thon, A Hygge-themed winter craft fair, school nutrition, and SO much more! Hope to see you then!

Volunteer Opportunities!

Volunteer “camp counselors” needed! We need a handful of middle school students and eager parents to help us make our first Parents Night Out a success! Think: summer camp counselor activities, but on a chilly Thursday night in November! We’ll be crafting, hokey pokey-ing, getting silly, and snuggling up to a movie and pizza. If you want to sign up for a shift, you can do so here!

Last Chance to Help Sell Pies!
The last day to support SES by buying delicious pies is October 31! Order your Dutch Caramel Apple, Cherry Crunch, Marionberry, Pumpkin, and Chocolate Cream pies while you still can! All pies are handmade by Willamette Valley Pie Company and come frozen so they are perfect for stocking up for the holidays or anytime that feels right for pie. Thank You For Coming To Harvest Fair!!!
WOW! The rain paused just in time. We pressed, plunged, pumpkin-ed, palace-ed and PARTIED for one of the largest and most epic ally attended Harvest Fairs in recent memory! That was awesome and it was so nice to see our school ALIVE with joy once again. THANK YOU to all volunteer s. From working shifts to bringing cookies to coming and having fun, we APPRECIATE YOU! Plus, we raised more than $7, 500 (!!!) for our GoFund and Garden Program . If you brought trays or tents, please pick them up this week near the stage.
We value your feedback. Tell us about your and your kids’ experience at the event , or share ideas for the future of Harvest Fair and how you want to get involved! TAKE THIS QUICK SURVEY .

Slots are filling up for Parent’s Night Out on November 10th!
Plan a date night because we’ve got you covered! Sunnyside PTSA is planning its first drop-off date night event on November 10 from 6-9pm! Several parent volunteers on the PTSA (we all have kiddos of our own at SES!) will be volunteering to hang with your kiddos while you hit the town! We’ll have PIZZA, ARTS & CRAFTS, SILLY GAMES, POPSICLES, and a PG MOVIE! This special night full of crafts, games, pizza and a movie is designed for Sunnyside students K-8 and will take place in the auditorium and cafeteria. The fundraising event is only $40 and there is even a special discount for siblings! Register your student(s) now as spots are VERY limited! Can’t wait to play with your kiddos on November 10th!

Bike Bus will continue!

It’s FINALLY here!! Harvest Fair is this weekend and we can hardly wait to see it in action. For many of us, this is our first ever Harvest Fair post-COVID, and in fact–ever! Okay, so there’s a bit of rain in the forecast. No biggie, because this is a rain or shine event and there are plenty of indoor activities for everyone to enjoy. (Plus, we are Portlanders!)

If you haven’t bought tickets yet, you’ll begin seeing opportunities for sales before and after school starting today! This incredible SES fundraiser is something you don’t want to miss! See you Saturday, 4 to 7 pm at Sunnyside!

Hello, Sunnyside community! We are thrilled to share that after the Harvest Fair and with the awesome participation in the Back to School Ask we are at $34,600 to our goal for the year of $106,000! We still have a long way to go, but we are feeling JAZZED about our progress!

WHAT’S AHEAD:
November 10 – Parent’s Night Out (fundraiser!)
November 18 – PTSA Meeting – all are welcome
December 2 – 1st Annual Winter Craft Fair (fundraiser!)

Our Next PTSA Meeting is Friday, November 18th at 8:45 a.m. in Room 102.
For those of you hoping to get more involved in future events or activities at SES, this meeting is for you! Coffee by Oblique Coffee Roasters as usual so bring your own mug! PARENT’S NIGHT OUT NOVEMBER 10th 6-9pm!

VOLUNTEERS: We could use a few more parent volunteers (perk: your kids get to come for free!) and 8th graders to sign up to help run the fun – HERE!

SIGN UP YOUR KIDDOS! You’re gonna want to snag one of the last spots! Here’s your chance to score a date night (or quiet bath and a movie?!) while your kids are crafting, hokey pokey-ing, playing board games, and snuggling up to a movie (Pixar!) with pizza and treats! Only $40 + a special sibling deal – register HERE!

WINTER CRAFT FAIR FUNDRAISER!
With a community as artistic as ours, we would be remiss to not host a WINTER CRAFT FAIR for our young artists to sell their wares! We’ll also have 10-12 spaces available for parent makers, too! On DECEMBER 2, 2022 from 3:30-7pm the auditorium will be transformed into a winter wonderland with student and parent/teacher-made crafts for sale, a bake sale (stay tuned for sign-ups!), hot cocoa, a raffle and live music! This event will be open to ALL!

STUDENT MAKERS!!! Jewelry, paintings, fiber arts, painted rocks, woodwork – any and all creations are welcome! And you are welcome to do this with a parent, sibling, or partner! We are here to help make your first selling journey a good one! You must have at least 20 items in your inventory and everything must be priced under $20. You will be assigned a space to set up your goodies and all signs, decorations, and cash transactions will be yours to manage! Please fill out this form by November 11th if you wish to participate. You keep all the money you earn! We only ask that you bring one extra for our raffle!

SES COMMUNITY & PARENT MAKERS!!! As part of the fundraising component of this event, we will be asking adult crafters to pay a sliding scale donation of $50-$75 to be a vendor. All the proceeds will be yours to keep, we just ask that you donate one item to our raffle! Spaces are limited so please tell us more about what you do HERE!

Happy Wednesday, fellow parents of Sunnyside-ers! Check out our thermometer below showing our fundraising progress so far in the first quarter of this school year, thanks to all of you who have contributed and participated in Harvest, Fair, our Back to School Ask, and Parents Night Out, happening tomorrow night ! Let’s keep the momentum going!

We will be planning future fundraisers at our next PTSA Meeting, happening Friday, November 18th at 8:45 a.m. in Room 102. If you can’t join in person, we are opening up a virtual option this time around, too! We are so excited to have a new parent teaming up with Christina in the cafeteria to talk about healthier foods and more nutritious options for students. SIGN UP YOUR KIDDOS! You’re gonna want to snag one of the last spots! Here’s your chance to score a date night (or quiet bath and a movie?!) while your kids are crafting, hokey pokey-ing, playing board games, and snuggling up to SING 2 with pizza and treats! WINTER CRAFT FAIR FUNDRAISER!
With a community as artistic as ours, we would be remiss to not host a WINTER CRAFT FAIR for our young artists to sell their wares! We’ll also have 10-12 spaces available for parent makers, too! On DECEMBER 2, 2022 from 3:30-7pm the auditorium will be transformed into a winter wonderland with student and parent/teacher-made crafts for sale, a bake sale (stay tuned for sign-ups!), hot cocoa, a raffle and live music! This event will be open to ALL!

STUDENT MAKERS!!! Jewelry, paintings, fiber arts, painted rocks, woodwork – any and all creations are welcome! And you are welcome to do this with a parent, sibling, or partner! We are here to help make your first selling journey a good one! You must have at least 20 items in your inventory and everything must be priced under $20. You will be assigned a space to set up your goodies and all signs, decorations, and cash transactions will be yours to manage! Please fill out this form by November 11th if you wish to participate. You keep all the money you earn! We only ask that you bring one extra for our raffle!

SES COMMUNITY & PARENT MAKERS!!! As part of the fundraising component of this event, we will be asking adult crafters to pay a sliding scale donation of $50-$75 to be a vendor. All the proceeds will be yours to keep, we just ask that you donate one item to our raffle! Spaces are limited so please tell us more about what you do HERE!

A HUGE thank you to all of the amazing parent and student volunteers who helped run our first Parents Night Out on Thursday evening, helping us host about 40 kids for a movie night, raising just shy of $800 toward our total fundraising goal! It was so much fun crafting, playing, pizza-ing, and fake pillow fighting with your kiddos while you were out and about! Thanks for entrusting us with their care. We hope to host a couple of these nights each year to help raise more funds and give our SES parents a much-deserved break!

This month, we are hosting a Winter Craft Fair as well as a Wrappily fundraiser and a Winter Wreath sale–all events that will continue to fund place-based learning at Sunnyside! You can learn more about these events below and sign up to help volunteer for a variety of fun activities!

Want to be more involved? You are in luck! Our next PTSA meeting is both virtual and in-person, scheduled for this upcoming Friday, November 18th at 8:45 a.m. in Room 102. If you can’t (or don’t want to!) join in person, we have set up a Google Meet option as well so you can attend virtually. We will open up the chat at about 8:40 a.m. and will remain open the duration of the meeting. Again, here is that ink for the meeting! Check out our full agenda for Friday, including presentations from our 5th and 8th graders, an update on fundraising, and free coffee from Oblique Coffee Roasters! BYOM (Bring your own mug!)

We also have a super special topic on the queue: Food at Sunnyside! One of our amazing parents will be discussing ways you can help support Christina in the cafeteria, hints for encouraging kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, and other changes to the school meal program this year. Hope to see lots of you there, in person or virtually!

Tonight, Wednesday, November 16 is SES’s restaurant fundraiser at ¿Por Que No? Taqueria. ¿Por Que No? will donate 10% of the day’s net on ALL SALES (dine in, delivery, take-out) at their Hawthorne location, up to $750! Go grab some tacos tomorrow and support our kids!

Final Week for our Wrapped in Wrappily Fundraiser!

Our Wrapped in Wrappily Fundraiser ends this Friday, Nov. 18. Get your infusion of rad, joyful gift wrap before it’s too late. Once you admit that it can’t be used a fourth time, it is 100% recyclable or compostable. That’s because it’s made on news print right here in the PNW. Remember – 35% of sales go back to SES to support the programs that make our school so unique! It’s back: Our Wreath Partnership Fundraiser! (NEW!)
Support SES, women farm workers, and bring some cheer to your home by ordering a wreath. We are excited to bring the wreath sale back after a one-year hiatus and to partner once again with justinereimnitz.

Volunteers Needed! WINTER CRAFT FAIR Help us create magic! (NEW!) We have 25 young crafters and 8 incredible community crafters working hard to prepare their jewelry, ornaments, wooden treasures, fiber arts (and so much more!) for the Winter Craft Fair on Friday, December 2 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. This special open house-style fundraiser (the last one of 2022!) needs a bunch of PARENT and STUDENT voluntee rs to be successful! Come and shop a bit…then volunteer for a shift…and shop some more! If you or your kiddos can help out, please SIGN UP HERE:
Parent volunteers are needed to:
– Bake goodies!
– Sell baked goods, hot cocoa, raffle tickets, and more!

Hello, Sunnyside parents! In our final 3 weeks of school before WINTER BREAK, we have one final FUNdraiser (Winter Craft Fair!), one special school event (Riparian Festival!) and one more PTSA meeting (December 9th!) where we’ll dig into all the goodness 2023 has in store for us as a community!

Volunteer Opportunities & Special Events!

WINTER CRAFT FAIR – THIS FRIDAY at 3:30pm!

To the many parents who have jumped into volunteer for the Winter Craft Fair – thank you! We could still use more PARENT AND STUDENT VOLUNTEERS to make the event a huge success for our talented student makers! Most of all we need BAKED GOODS! Not only do we want to make sure that everyone that comes to shop at the Winter Craft Fair gets a delicious treat, but the bake sale is also a key part of our fundraising! If you can drop off a plate of cookies, brownies, cupcakes, or any special treat that can be passed off individually, please add your name to this list and drop it off in the office any time on Friday! SIGN UP HERE!!!

Please also JOIN US! There will be 25 student makers selling everything from beaded bracelets, to knit potholders, ornaments, original art, earrings and so much more! There will also be 10 amazing adult crafters selling bath salts, bike gear, tote bags, upcycled earrings and so much more! There will also be hot cocoa, baked goodies, a hygge corner, crafts, a raffle and the Students of Color will be selling their merch! Come enjoy and support! And please tell your friends and neighbors!

The Winter Craft Fair will be in the auditorium starting at 3:30pm and we will close around 6:30pm!

WREATH PICK-UP AND SALES!

If you pre-ordered a wreath, you will be able to pick it up at the Winter Craft Fair! And, there will even be some extras on sale for $40 each! With this fundraiser, we are thrilled to support this amazing organization of women farm workers: Mujeres Luchadoras Progresistas (Women Striving for Progress).

Community Kitchen Volunteer Needed!

Do you love to organize? Is Marie Kondo-ing your house your favorite activity? We’ve got the volunteer job for YOU! PTSA and Sunnyside could use a super organizer to lead the effort in clearing out our community kitchen and storage space in the cafeteria. What does this entail? Basically, it means taking everything out of cabinets, testing it, checking it for dents and cracks, and cleaning it up to see if it can still be put to use! We would love to have clean, organized cabinets with everything working and in its place! Like to shop? We’re also hoping this person can help shop (with a small provided budget) for and purchase a few useful new items to replace anything that needs tossing. This project can be done anytime in January! WILLY WONKA Registration Updates!
We had some technical difficulties on our signup day last Saturday, so some families were not able to enter the school musical registration site. We are so sorry for the inconvenience, and we will have a few spots opening up for students on our waitlist soon. If you were not able to register and are still interested in doing so, please send an email with your student’s name and grade to fundraising. Additionally, we do still have the ability to process scholarship applications. If your student would like to participate, but you are unable to afford the $150 reduced tuition, please email rjohnson10 to inquire about scholarships!

Welcome back to school, Sunnyside-ers! It’s a whirlwind of a week for sure, as we all get back into the swing after a long winter break! We are keeping this week’s email short and sweet, but next week you can look forward to a full survey of PTSA activities to help us guide our priorities for the second half of the school year! We also have so many fun events coming up, including everyone’s favorite, Read-a-thon, coming up in Spring! THANK you so much for all that you do to make this school so magical!

Volunteer Opportunities & Special Events!
Been wanting to volunteer? Here’s a meaningful opportunity!

Do you know about the PTA clothing center? Since 1964, PTSA’s around Portland send volunteers to the clothing center a couple times each year. The purpose of the center is to give out free, age-appropriate clothing to students in need, district-wide. By caring for the basic needs of youth and allowing them to dress as their peers, they are encouraging positive self-esteem, academic success, and regular class attendance. T hursday, Jan. 12 is Sunnyside’s day to send 5-6 volunteers from 9:30am -1:30pm, to help kids receive clothing and to help sort donations The center is located at the Marshall (Benson HS) Campus in SE Portland. If you’re available to help for a couple of hours or more, please email Auburn at auburnmarie3.

School-Wide Activities & Opportunities!

WILLY WONKA FOR GRADES 5-8!
Registration is Saturday 1/7 at 9am – limited spots available!

The PTSA is excited to partner with Portland Drama Club to offer a new after-school program that will teach students the ins and outs of musical theatre while building toward an all-SES spring production of Willy Wonka !

Registration for this after-school program will open at 9am on Saturday, January 7th, and tuition will be on a sliding scale of $150-$250 per participant.

Rehearsals begin Monday, February 6th at 3:30pm in the SES auditorium and will be Mondays and occasional Fridays through the end of April!

Details about the rehearsal and show dates, times, and the necessary level of commitment + registration link (which will open on 1/17 at 9am) can be found HERE!

Sunnyside families! It’s another big week so we are keeping our PTSA newsletter light! We can’t wait to see you all again NEXT YEAR at the January 9th (8:45am) PTSA meeting (in-person and virtual!) but first, a few pertinent things!

LET’S TREAT THE SES STAFF TO BREAKFAST!

We’ll be showing our love & appreciation for the wonderful Sunnyside staff by providing breakfast treats on DECEMBER 15th! We are asking Sunnyside families to bring in homemade or store-bought pastries, muffins, quiches – anything brunch-y (we’ll provide the coffee!) – Thursday morning! You can drop your contribution off in the office, ideally by 8:30 am, so our teachers can grab a plate before class! Gluten-Free, Vegan and/or Low Sugar options are always especially appreciated!

SES SPRING MUSICAL IS BACK FOR GRADES 5-8!

The PTSA is delighted to partner with rjohnson10 by December 16th – we are holding spots for you! Details about the rehearsal and show dates, times, and overall level of commitment can be found HERE!

PIZZA NIGHT IS THURSDAY!!

Straight From New York Pizza on Belmont Street is sponsoring our SES Dine-Out night on December 15th!

Supporting our Sunnyside community with great pizza and GENEROUS donations for years, they will donate 20% of ALL sales from 4:00 pm until closing.
